Raw, Vegan/Vegatarian Eating – Easy Nutmeat Recipe

Here is a recipe for a quick to make, tasty spread. It is vegan/vegetarian, high in protein and minerals, quick to make and ideal for a lunch meal or as part of the dinner meal. The nut source for this recipe is walnuts, and here is an article on the healing power of walnuts.

Nutmeat

  • 2 cups walnuts
  • 1 cup sun dried tomatoes, soaked 4 hours
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons (to taste) of shoyu (tamari)
  • 1/4 cup of olive oil

This recipe can be prepared in a blender or food processor.  If using a blender chop the walnuts finely prior to adding to the blender and add the liquid ingredients first.  Blend.  If necessary add a small amount of water to reach the desired consistency.  If using a food processor place all of the ingredients into the food processor and blend until thoroughly combined and is your desired consistency.

Can be used as a sandwich spread or with a grain (such as brown rice) a salad and a veggie for a complete meal.  Enjoy

What is pure yoga?

One of the most interesting things about life is that at any moment one can receive a revelation as to the next course of action or the next open pathway of the living journey. I recently applied to teach yoga at the local gym. After my demonstration the fitness coordinator explained that although my style of teaching was very accessible to the prospective student, it was too spiritually based and they were looking for “pure” yoga teachers.
Pure yoga?
I thanked her for the opportunity and went on my way. Later that evening during my daily review and reflection, it occurred to me that most yoga Studios, gyms etc… are teaching Yoga purely as a form of exercise. In contrast, I and thousands of other yoginis learned yoga for the purpose of spiritually reuniting mind, body and spirit. I am well aware that yoga as a form of exercise can really help the body tone up and will use muscles you never knew you had, giving the body a leaner more fit appearance. Yoga for this purpose has been popularized by many celebrities, athletes, and entertainers. And while these are all very fine additional benefits from the practice of yoga, what I want to suggest is perhaps a less popular view.

Using yoga merely as a form of exercise is like buying a Ferrari and driving it 5 blocks everyday and parking it back in the garage. There are far greater depths one can ascertain from a focused, spiritually intentioned yoga practice. Even if the practitioner focuses on the breath flow more than insisting that the body perfects bone contorting asanas or positions, the spirit will oblige with some healing revelation or other gift of the spirit the person needs for their life journey. And with the state of humanity these days we all need our “gifts” to be front and center. So continue to use yoga for exercise. Enjoy the fitness and vitality the local gym classes provide, but during your quite time, or personal practice at home really begin to focus on the true meaning of yoga which is to reunite mind body and spirit, and add your healing gifts to the collective to make a better world starting with yours. Health Bulletin: Use Caution with Pain Relievers

(NAPS) — Acetaminophen is a safe and effective pain reliever that benefits millions of consumers. However, taking too much could lead to serious liver damage. There are about 600 products that contain acetaminophen, including cough and cold products and sleep aids. It is also an ingredient in many prescription pain relievers. The Food and Drug Administration warns consumers that all over-the-counter pain relievers should be taken with care to avoid serious problems that can occur with misuse.

Parents should be cautious when giving acetaminophen to children. For example, the infant drop formula is three times stronger than the children’s suspension. To help make sure your infant is getting the infants’ formula and your child is getting the children’s formula, you should read and follow the directions on the label every time you use a medicine. Parents are cautioned against giving any acetaminophen or cough and cold medications to children under 2 years of age without the advice of a health care provider.

Avoid Overdosing

To avoid accidental overdosing, it’s very important not to take more than the recommended dose on the label. Also, you should not take acetaminophen for more days than recommended, or take more than one drug product that contains acetaminophen at the same time. Consumers should be aware that taking more than the recommended dose will not provide more relief.

Liver Damage

Your liver helps break down and remove many chemicals or drugs that enter your body. Too much acetaminophen overloads the liver’s ability to process the drug safely. Under certain circumstances, particularly when more acetaminophen is ingested than is recommended on the label, more of the toxic chemical is produced than the body can easily eliminate, resulting in serious damage to the liver.

Signs of Liver Disease

The signs of liver disease include abnormally yellow skin and eyes, dark urine, light-colored stools, nausea, vomiting and loss of appetite. The signs can be similar to flu symptoms and may go unnoticed for several days if you believe your symptoms are related to a cold or flu you may already have. National Health Care, Why?

One of the odd things about insurance is that organizations that provide it generally do not want their customers to use the product. Regardless whether it is home insurance, business, auto, or health the typical claimant is not particularly embraced with open arms. Premiums are paid monthly for a product you hope you never have to use. Highly paid mathematical whiz types calculate myriad ways to offset risky policy holders and the “losses”, they could produce, so the bottom line stays healthy.

Television commercials, offer insurance products to individuals say, over age 60. A payout benefit of $50,000 or so is guaranteed. I wonder where does the money come from? The individual has not put that amount in. How is the system structured to pay the benefit? Is it some kind of scheme?

Honestly I haven’t been too engaged in listening to the debate. In my humble view, we are asking the wrong questions. The players, meaning the doctors, hospitals and perhaps the government seem to have agendas. Health, is in my view, precious and shouldn’t be bandied about in any kind of one up manship. The public is advised to poo-poo anything out of the mainstream, when it comes to health care. All of the dollars are for drugs, pills, surgery, vaccines and high tech medical devices. The health care model is not focused on health. It thrives on people being sick. This model hasn’t produced the most healthiest citizenry. And it is so expensive. Some Americans live longer now. Women still live longer then men. But with the health care system currently in place, Americans are fatter, diabetes is epidemic and juvenile diabetes is growing, more people are depressed and the drugs are showing up in the public water supply. The only health approach suggested is check-ups and vaccines. When a healthy diet is suggested food industry groups lobby because they don’t want anyone to say for example avoid dairy milk, or drink less milk or eat less cheese, sugar or any other commodity. How as a nation can we be healthy when we want to corral people into being mindless automatons?

Instead of national health care, why not promote national responsibility? Why is our food supply always being tampered with? Instead of debating insurance coverage, let’s debate responsibility. Why not allow the public real choice? Provide the public with real food from healthy soil.

Young vegetarians may be at risk of binge eating

One of the keys to being a healthy vegetarian/vegan or raw-fooder is correct information.  According to this story reported (here) many young vegetarians may have problems from binge eating. Here is a definition of binge eating (more here):
* Frequent episodes of eating what others would consider an abnormally large amount of food.

* Frequent feelings of being unable to control what or how much is being eaten.

* Several of these behaviors or feelings:

1. Eating much more rapidly than usual.
2. Eating until uncomfortably full.
3. Eating large amounts of food, even when not physically hungry.
4. Eating alone out of embarrassment at the quantity of food being eaten.
5. Feelings of disgust, depression, or guilt after overeating.
Does this mean the young vegetarian will wake up in the middle of the night and raid the refrigerator for carrots, tofu and broccoli? I doubt it. Perhaps it means that anyone can be challenged to eat mindfully.

Solutions
Eating with awareness is something many people are challenged to do. Help your young vegetarian with well written cookbooks, cooking meals together as a family and eating as a family. Encouraging good eating habits for all family members will reduce binge eating for all.

Fish in U.S. Rivers Tainted With Common Medications

Do you eat fish as a means to a healthy diet? Well, er before you take out that fishing rod, or purchase that package of fish you may want to check out where that fish swam. Turns out waste from the many medications in use by the American populace is ending up as effluent in the river. Does any one feel for the fish?

* norfluoxetine, an active ingredient in the antidepressant fluoxetine (Prozac);
* the antidepressant sertraline (Zoloft);
* galaxolide and tonalide, common odor-enhancing ingredients in soap and other hygiene products.
Years ago, actually decades, the problem was mercury in the water…and I don’t think that ever went away, now add this.

Fructose versus High Fructose Corn Syrup

The article below is by the American Journal of Nutrition, odd that a nutritional organization would endorse high fructose corn syrup (HFCS).  Does HFCS cause obesity?  Overeating leads to obesity.  The real question is the nutritive content of what we are ingesting, or lack thereof.

What we eat is what makes up our hair, skin, every cell of the body and influences our very thoughts.  The article is written by a trade group and goes as far to consider HFCS.  It goes as far to say it is a “natural” product.  A total corruption of the concept and meaning of the word natural.  HFCS is a highly refined product.  It is not a naturally occuring substance and it use is implicated as causative in a number of degenerative, chronic health conditions such as diabetes and kidney disease.

This kind of article seriously reduced the credibility of the Nutrition Journal, imho.

Pure fructose frequently confused with high fructose corn syrup

New studies, ongoing misunderstanding can lead to consumer confusion

WASHINGTON, DC – As researchers continue to examine the role of sweeteners in the diet, it’s important that people understand the differences among various ingredients used in scientific studies, according to the Corn Refiners Association (CRA). Interchanging two distinctly different ingredients, such as pure fructose and high fructose corn syrup, creates factually incorrect conclusions and misleads consumers.

Recent studies using pure fructose that purport to show that the body processes high fructose corn syrup differently than other sugars due to fructose content are a classic example of this problem because pure fructose cannot be extrapolated to high fructose corn syrup. The abnormally high levels of pure fructose used in these studies are not found in the human diet.

Fructose consumption at normal human dietary levels and as part of a balanced diet has not been shown to yield such results. Moreover, human fructose intake is nearly always accompanied by the simultaneous and equivalent intake of glucose – a critical and distinguishing factor from pure fructose used in these studies.

Following are some facts about high fructose corn syrup and fructose:

* High fructose corn syrup contains approximately equal ratios of fructose and glucose. Table sugar also contains equal ratios of fructose and glucose. High fructose corn syrup and sugar are equally sweet and both contain four calories per gram.

* Fructose is a natural, simple sugar commonly found in fruits and honey. The absence of glucose makes pure fructose fundamentally different from high fructose corn syrup.

* Common dietary sources of fructose and glucose include fruits, vegetables, nuts and sweeteners (sugar, honey, high fructose corn syrup, fruit juice concentrates and agave nectar).

* There is no meaningful difference in how the body metabolizes table sugar and high fructose corn syrup. Once the combination of glucose and fructose found in high fructose corn syrup and sucrose are absorbed into the blood stream, the two types of sweetener appear to be metabolized similarly using well-characterized metabolic pathways.

* High fructose corn syrup meets the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s requirements for use of the term “natural.” It is made from corn, a natural grain product and contains no artificial or synthetic ingredients or color additives.

The American Medical Association in June 2008 helped put to rest a common misunderstanding about high fructose corn syrup and obesity, stating that “high fructose syrup does not appear to contribute to obesity more than other caloric sweeteners.” Even former critics of high fructose corn syrup dispelled long-held myths and distanced themselves from earlier speculation about the sweetener’s link to obesity in a comprehensive scientific review published in a recent supplement of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (2008 Vol. 88).
