The Power of Symptoms

It is necessary to know sickness not from pathology, not from physical diagnosis, no matter how important these are, but by symptoms, the language of nature.

James Tyler Kent

Instead of Fighting Germs…

Does this seem paradoxical?  It is not really.  Germs have myriad functions and are not the cause of disease.  Germs are opportunistic like any other living thing.  When we are healthy they simply are not able to establish a  toehold. It is when the conditions for them are ripe: too much stress, ill thoughts, poor eating, poor sleep, then we may experience what is often called “getting sick.”  The germ itself may have been co- existing in your environment all along.

Current medical “science” has advocated killing microorganisms with the use of antibiotics.  This hasn’t worked.  The organisms have adapted to the threat of having their species wiped out and have developed their own immunity to the antibiotics that were made by man.  Now superbugs exist.  When our natural immunity  functions well it too has the ability to adapt to the environment to keep us healthy.  This is not to say there are not times we need medicine.  But what kind of medicine?  That which focuses on killing germs, suppressing our natural immunity and often comes with side effects.  Or medicine which stimulates our immune system towards self-healing such as homeopathic medicine.

When we look around the earth, we can observe that nothing lives in a sterile environment, and, nature abhors a vacuum.  Cleanliness is important.  Obsessiveness isn’t.  In the quest for better health instead of fighting germs. Cultivate good, simple healthy living and everything will be in its proper place.

Evidence for Homeopathic Medicine Continues to Grow

Long-awaited English translation of Swiss study endorses evidence for homeopathy

  • Swiss government enacts public desire to include homeopathy in state-backed health insurance
  • Personal testimonies reinforce: ‘it works!’

Only recently published, the English translation of the 2006 Swiss Health Technology Assessment (HTA) report on homeopathy offers a clear endorsement of the benefits of this form of complementary medicine.

This important report addresses the evidence for the effectiveness of homeopathic therapy in everyday use (i.e. the real world), its safety and its cost-effectiveness.

The authors, Doctor Gudrun Bornhöft and Professor Peter Matthiessen, state: “There is sufficient evidence for the preclinical effectiveness and the clinical efficacy of homeopathy and for its safety and economy compared with conventional treatment.”

Following on from the initial publication of this report, a public referendum in Switzerland in 2009 supported the inclusion of homeopathy and other complementary and alternative medicines in the Swiss national health insurance, with 67% of the people voting in favour. Earlier this month, the Swiss government passed legislation to enact the referendum’s conclusion.

The 234-page HTA report exhaustively reviews the clinical research in homeopathy. It includes a summary of 22 systematic reviews of clinical trials, 20 of which show a positive direction of evidence for homeopathy. And an assessment of the original clinical trials of homeopathy in allergies and upper respiratory tract infections provides supporting evidence for the effectiveness of homeopathic treatment for these conditions.

Homeopathy’s effectiveness in treating allergies is backed by personal testimonies. Jenny, a 31 year old mother from Perthshire in Scotland who had suffered from severe allergic reactions since childhood, sought help from homeopathy after becoming immune to an increasing number of conventional anti-histamine medications. Following a consultation at an NHS clinic with a doctor who had also trained in homeopathy, Jenny was prescribed homeopathic medicine specifically to counter her allergies. Since the treatment, she’s not had an allergic reaction in over two years. Jenny credits homeopathy with curing her condition and says that “My only regret is that I didn’t seek help from a homeopath sooner, as I’m convinced it would have saved me from years of discomfort and illness”.

Speaking on behalf of the UK’s Faculty of Homeopathy, President Dr Sara Eames said:

“The publication of the Swiss HTA report on homeopathy in English makes an important contribution to the field of homeopathy research. Its thorough and constructive approach will contribute to informing patients, doctors and decision-makers who are evaluating homeopathy. Bornhöft and Matthiessen have given us an academically rigorous document which will enlighten more and better quality research in homeopathy.”

The study was commissioned by Switzerland’s Federal Social Insurance Office (FSIO) as part of an overall evaluation of complementary and alternative medicines (CAMs).

Homeopathy Around the World: Liverpool

NHS homeopathy thriving in Liverpool

A new clinic is now providing homeopathic treatment to NHS patients in Liverpool. The Liverpool Medical Homeopathy Service (LMHS) operates from the Old Swan Health Centre in Old Swan and is staffed by medically trained homeopaths. Patients can gain NHS access to the service through a letter of referral from their GP.

Liverpool PCT is commissioning the new service from the LMHS which is a Community Interest Company, a limited company created to provide a service for the benefit of the community and not purely for private advantage. The setting up of the clinic also highlights the new approach to commissioning NHS services being adopted as part of the government’s NHS reforms.

Dr Hugh Nielsen, Clinical Director at the clinic said: “The opening of LMHS represents the next chapter in a long and distinguished history of homeopathic provision in Liverpool. There has been a homeopathy service in the city for more than a century, which became part of the NHS at its inception in 1948.

“Patient satisfaction with Liverpool homeopathy is very high. A patient experience survey conducted by Liverpool Community Health during 2010 at the NHS Liverpool department of homeopathic medicine showed that of 165 people questioned, 80 per cent rated the service as excellent, 14 per cent deemed it very good and 5.5 per cent rated it as good.”

Homeopathy is a system of evidence-based medicine that works on the principle that “like cures like”. This means that the medicines used are derived from substances that if taken by a healthy person can cause symptoms similar to the illness, but when taken by the patient they trigger the body’s natural healing process.

Swedish court rules: ‘Doctors can recommend homeopathy’

The Supreme Administrative Court has recently ruled that Swedish doctors can openly recommend homeopathy to their patients. Until recently homeopathy had not been accepted by the Swedish health authorities as an official therapeutic approach, and doctors in Sweden were not allowed to prescribe homeopathic medicines.

FDA, FTC act to remove “homeopathic” HCG weight loss Product

oh, woo-hoo, I don’t know if this is such a good idea.  Don’t we have brains to decide what products to use.  The FDA is the agency that recommended over the counter birth control for young pre-teens and teen girls.  That is a product fraught with risk on physical and emotional levels.  Excellent research is available demonstrating how the brain is not fully developed until about the age of 27.  But to our rescue the FDA wants to remove a weight loss product that is used at your discretion, by adults.  By the way, substances can be produced using a homeopathic method.  That has little in common with homeopathic prescribing for health concerns.  These should not be confused.

I know of someone who used this type product, HCG for weight loss.  A rather astute person.  And no, it was not me.   She used common sense and it helped her lose weight.  Is it good for everyone?  Probably not.  But should you be allowed to decide for yourself?  It is amazing how so many ‘approved’ drugs harm  people, but that seems to be ok.

Here is the press release. and below.

FDA, FTC act to remove “homeopathic” HCG weight loss products from the market

Joint action is first step in halting sale of the products

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) today issued seven Warning Letters to companies marketing over-the counter (OTC) HCG products that are labeled as “homeopathic” for weight loss.

Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) is a hormone produced by the human placenta and found in the urine of pregnant women. HCG is FDA-approved as an injectable prescription drug for the treatment of some cases of female infertility and other medical conditions.

The letters warn the companies that they are violating federal law by selling drugs that have not been approved, and by making unsupported claims for the substances. There are no FDA-approved HCG drug products for weight loss.

The joint action is the first step in keeping the unproven and potentially unsafe products from being marketed online and in retail outlets as oral drops, pellets, and sprays.

The labeling for the “homeopathic” HCG products states that each product should be taken in conjunction with a very low calorie diet. There is no substantial evidence HCG increases weight loss beyond that resulting from the recommended caloric restriction.  Consumers on a very low calorie diet are at increased risk for side effects including gallstone formation, electrolyte imbalance, and heart arrhythmias.

“These HCG products marketed over-the-counter are unproven to help with weight loss and are potentially dangerous even if taken as directed,” said Ilisa Bernstein, acting director of the Office of Compliance in FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. “And a very low calorie diet should only be used under proper medical supervision.”

“Deceptive advertising about weight loss products is one of the most prevalent types of fraud,” said David Vladeck, director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection. “Any advertiser who makes health claims about a product is required by federal law to back them up with competent and reliable scientific evidence, so consumers have the accurate information they need to make good decisions.”

According to the Warning Letters, the companies have 15 days to notify the FDA of the steps they have taken to correct the violations cited. Failure to do so may result in legal action, including seizure and injunction, or criminal prosecution.
Consumers and health care professionals are encouraged to report adverse events (side effects) that may be related to the use of these products to MedWatch, the FDA’s voluntary reporting program, by calling 800-FDA-1088, or electronically at www.fda.gov/medwatch/report.htm1.
The FDA, an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, protects the public health by assuring the safety, effectiveness, and security of human and veterinary drugs, vaccines and other biological products for human use, and medical devices. The agency also is responsible for the safety and security of our nation’s food supply, cosmetics, dietary supplements, products that give off electronic radiation, and for regulating tobacco products.

Say Bye to the Blues: Be Happy this Holiday Season

It is not news that depression hits hard during the holiday season. Regardless of how depression tries to rear its creepy head.  We can simply stare it in the eye and change the funk.  Yea,  light yourself up!!  Ignore the gloomy statistics.  Life is simply too short to miss any of it by being out of sorts.  So here is a list of some pick me ups:

  1. The minute, oops, no the second, you hear any gloomy statistics, or news…cut it off.  Just totally tune it out.
  2. Keep a journal.  Or just write notes to yourself of what you are happy and thankful for.
  3. The original intent of the holiday season it that these days are Holy.  The winter solstice, the stillness all around make it much easier to tune into your deep self.  Enjoy simply being with you.
  4. Focus on being, not so much doing.  Avoid crowds, booze, chocolate and other goo.  Eat clean and capture the specialness of the season.
  5. Craft special handmade gits.
  6. Give of yourself.  Find an organization to donate clothes too or help feed the homeless.
  7. Contact an organization that calls people  who are home bound and volunteer.
  8. Do you have any special holiday music that you like to listen to?  Belt out your favorite tunes and let ‘er rip.
  9. Light a candle.
  10. Place fresh pine or cedar by your front door.
  11. String up indoor lights for their pretty glow.
  12. Take a vitamin D supplement.  Most Americans are deficient and it will help divert seasonal affective disorder.
  13. Drink warm tea, green tea or warm water with fresh lemon juice.  Keep your belly warm.
  14. Keep a little sweet potpourri brewing and breath in deep the pleasant smells.
  15. Dance, treat yourself to some spicy Flamenco or do some jiggly belly dance.
  16. Go out. Social events are plentiful.  Find something that suits your rhythm.
  17. Wherever you go, leave a trail of *joy*.
  18. Peace starts with just one person, you.

Happy Holidays!

Research: Improving Cold Intolerance with Reflexology

A pilot study exploring the effects of reflexology on cold intolerance.

Abstract

Cold intolerance is an inability to tolerate cold temperatures and is accompanied by symptoms including headache, shoulder discomfort, dizziness and palpitations. The current study was performed to examine whether reflexology therapy affected cold intolerance in human subjects and whether the treatment was systemically effective.

Ten female volunteer examinees with subjective feelings of cold were examined. After a 5-minute foot bath, 10 minutes of reflexology therapy was performed on their left foot. Skin temperature and blood flow were estimated before and after treatment, together with an interview concerning their feelings of cold and daily habits. In addition, how the recovery rate was affected by the application of a chilled-water load was also estimated. Along with significant increases in skin temperature and blood flow compared with pre-treatment at the bilateral points of KI-1, LR-3, and BL-60, a faster recovery after the application of the chilled-water load was also seen in the lower limbs on both sides.

From these results, we conclude that reflexology has systemic effects and is an alternative method for treating cold intolerance.

Tips for Healing Sadness

According to the American Psychiatric Association guidelines medication is the preferred form of treatment for depression (see below).  However this approach has drawbacks such as addiction, side-effects and possible withdraw symptoms.  Try these instead:

  • Check if you have any nutritional imbalances (i.e. B vitamins, vitamin D).
  • Are you addicted to sugar, caffeine, cigarettes or other substances?
  • How much time do you spend outdoors?  Fresh air, outdoor exercising such as walking is highly restorative.
  • How is your sleep?  Remove electronics such as tv’s from the bedroom, and don’t sleep with the tv on.
  • Change how you think.  There are numerous books on the topic.  Our thoughts shape our reality.  If your thoughts are terrorizing you, learn how to change them.
  • Explore homeopathic medicine; this natural approach is free from side-effects and helps to get at the core of the problem.
  • Explore flower essences.
  • Acupuncture can help too.
  • Watch funny movies.  Laugh.
  • Join a local Laughter Yoga chapter in your community.  Can’t find any?  Start one.  Which leads to the last solution on the list.
  • Find someone to help.  As you count your blessings and develop an attitude of gratitude you will become more peaceful.

Sadness in America

  • About one in 10 Americans aged 12 and over takes antidepressant medication.
  • About 14% of Americans taking antidepressant medication have done so for 10 years or longer.
  • Females are more likely than males to take antidepressant medication at every level of depression severity.
  • Non-Hispanic white persons are more likely to take antidepressant medication than persons of other races and ethnicities.
    • Fourteen percent of non-Hispanic white persons take antidepressant medications compared with 4% of non-Hispanic black and 3% of Mexican-American persons.
    • There is no difference by income in the prevalence of antidepressant usage.

Slightly over one-third of persons aged 12 and over with current severe depressive symptoms were taking antidepressants. According to American Psychiatric Association guidelines, medications are the preferred treatment for moderate to severe depressive symptomatology. The public health importance of increasing treatment rates for depression is reflected in Healthy People 2020, which includes national objectives to increase treatment for depression in adults and treatment for mental health problems in children.

Facing Fear

Death is not the biggest fear we have; our biggest fear is taking the risk to be alive, the risk to be alive and express what we really are.
