Louie Pastuer and Homeopathy

A great article I just had to pass on. Louie Pasteur has a place in history as the father of pasteurization. And while some laud him, there are many who see his theories as flawed. However, only one view is presented of his work. It has been said that, Pasteur himself, stated that his theories about the organisms were wrong, that the problem is the soil.

Americans Eating More “Better for You” Foods and Less Dieting

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The percentage of adults on a diet has decreased by 10 percentage points since 1990, while the number of Americans eating healthier has increased, according to NPD Group’s National Eating Trends report. It finds that at least once in a two-week period, more than 70% of Americans are consuming reduced-fat foods, and over half of them are eating reduced-calorie, whole-grain or fortified foods. In addition to these foods, other “better-for-you” items consumed include diet, light, reduced-cholesterol, reduced-sodium, caffeine-free, sugar-free, fortified, organic and low-carb foods. The average American, according to National Eating Trends, has at least two better-for-you products a day. “While dieting for both women and men remain huge markets, they are not growing markets,” said Harry Balzer, vice president, the NPD Group, in a statement. “The desire to lose weight really was a 90s trend. Today consumers appear to be making healthier food choices.”

Americans’ Rising Debt Leads to Sleepless Nights

For millions of Americans who can’t stop thinking about their rising debt, dreaming it away is not an option. “A lot of debt can make it harder for people to sleep,” Corey Backes, a director and an ex-counselor at the Debt Counseling Corp. in Hauppauge, said yesterday.

They also get sick, according to the results of a new Associated Press-AOL Health poll. Respondents revealed that stress created from rising debt brought on neck pain and headaches, ulcers, severe depression and even heart attacks.

Dr. Elizabeth Carll, a clinical psychologist and author in Huntington, said the results are not surprising. She’s noticing more health-related issues in people whose businesses go under. “They might feel severe anxiety or find they are having panic attacks or bouts of depression,” she said. “Once the business has deteriorated, debt increases; and from that comes great stress.”

The study was conducted March 24-April 3 with 1,002 adults in all states except Alaska and Hawaii. The margin of error was plus or minus 3.1 percentage points. Among respondents:

27 percent had ulcers or digestive tract problems, compared with 8 percent of those with low levels of debt stress.

23 percent had severe depression, compared with 4 percent with low debt stress. (continue)

Chocolate Bar “Health” Study

Perhaps not the best way to seek to lower one’s cholesterol.

The results of a University of Illinois study have demonstrated an effective way to lower cholesterol levels – by eating chocolate bars.

“Eating two CocoaVia dark chocolate bars a day not only lowered cholesterol, it had the unexpected effect of also lowering systolic blood pressure,” said John Erdman, a U. of I. professor of food science and human nutrition.

The study, funded in part by Mars Inc., the company that makes the bars, was published in the Journal of Nutrition.

Erdman attributes the drop in cholesterol numbers (total cholesterol by 2 percent and LDL or “bad” cholesterol by 5.3 percent) to the plant sterols that have been added to the bar and the drop in blood pressure to the flavanols found in dark chocolate.

Erdman says that some people will assume the study is flawed because of Mars’ funding role.

“I know that it was a double-blinded trial that wasn’t skewed toward a particular result,” said Erdman, who chairs the Mars Scientific Advisory Council. “Moreover, the paper was peer-reviewed and published in the Journal of Nutrition, which ranks in the top 10 percent of all the biological science journals.” Mars has spent millions of dollars studying the biological impact of the flavanols found in cocoa beans and learning how to retain their benefits during the refining process, Erdman said.

Forty-nine persons with slightly elevated cholesterol and normal blood pressure were recruited for the study. Those chosen for the double-blind, placebo-controlled, cross-over study began the American Heart Association’s “Eating Plan for Healthy Americans” (formerly the Step 1 diet) two weeks before the study started; then they were divided into two matched groups. Two types of CocoaVia bars were then introduced, one with plant sterols and one without.

While remaining on the AHA diet, participants ate one CocoaVia formulation twice daily for four weeks, then switched to the other bar for an additional four weeks. Blood cholesterol levels, blood pressure, body weight, and other cardiovascular measures were tracked throughout the eight-week study.

“After the participants started the AHA diet, a lot of them began to lose weight, so we had to keep fussing at them to eat more. We didn’t want a weight change because that also lowers cholesterol,” said Ellen Evans, a U. of I. professor of kinesiology and community health and co-author of the study.

“After starting the CocoaVia bars, we saw a marked differential effect on blood cholesterol, with the sterol-containing products doing better than those without sterols,” she said.

A CocoaVia bar contains 100 calories.

Other authors of the study are LeaAnn Carson of the U. of I. and Catherine Kwik-Uribe, research manager of Mars. Dietitian Robin Allen conducted the study under Erdman’s supervision. The work also was supported by a grant from the U. of I.

Weekly Inspiration #15

A Beam of Divinity – Seneca

To see a man fearless in danger,
Untainted by lust,
Happy in adversity,
Composed in turmoil,
And laughing at all those things
which are coveted or feared by others -

All men must acknowledge,
that this can be nothing else but a beam of divinity
animating a human body.

An Egg is Born, Human Ovulation Caught on Camera

This is incredible. A human egg was filmed as it burst forth from the ovary. The doctor spotted it during a hysterectomy.

A human egg has been filmed in close-up emerging from the ovary for the first time, captured by chance during a routine operation.

Fertile women release one or more eggs every month, but until now, only animal ovulation has been recorded in detail.

Gynaecologist Dr Jacques Donnez spotted it in progress during a hysterectomy.

The pictures, published in New Scientist magazine, were described as “fascinating” by a UK fertility specialist. (more)

The Natural Beauty of the Butterfly

The natural beauty of the butterfly. Butterflies are a symbol of beauty and metamorphosis.
“The fallen blossom never returns to the branch,
I thought that the blossom had returned to the branch,
-alas, it was only a butterfly.”

Acupuncture Research – Help for Depression

A recent study of alternative healing methods for depression found acupuncture beneficial. The study was done at a school for Traditional Chinese Medicine. The researchers enlisted a group of about 40 people with severe depression, and allocated half to get 12 acupuncture treatments over eight weeks.

All were taking a standard SSRI antidepressant like Aropax, Prozac or Zoloft. (more). Western medical practitioners remain skeptical, saying the study was limited in its format and there was no proof the treatment continued to work over time.

It’s All About Attitude

On Oprah today, a guest shared her story about how she put her cancer into remission. A bit of the wisdom that she shared: “I started drinking green drinks instead of martinis.” She turned to spiritual principles a clean diet, right thinking and yoga. She turned her story into a documentary.

The road she took which led her to become much more alive is similar to what Norman Cousins did when he was told by his doctors “you have a terminal illness” “there is nothing we can do”. Bah! He took control.
So did this young lady. One of the most powerful healing acts is to choose, to really want it and to do what it takes to get there. Want it. Wanting it means that you have to beyond a diagnosis and research studies into the power of healing and use treatments that heal and strengthen the body, the mind and the spirit.

The Gardasil Vaccination, A Study in Tragedy?

The info posted below is from this young lady’s blog. In an attempt to pass the word about what she is currently dealing with. Visit her blog (here), medical professionals should check it out also and of course teens, young women and their mothers.

Her blog has additional information on other cases in where Gardasil is implicated. We can keep her in our prayers.

Welcome to the Family Blog for Jenny.

Jenny is a 14 year-old girl who lives in Northern California.

Over the last year, she has gone from being a fully healthy 13 year-old to being nearly completely paralyzed. She retains movement only in her neck and mouth and faintly in her left hand. This rapid decline in motor ability has understandably shocked and concerned us [her family]. We have responded by working with the best doctors in the field, fighting continuously to reach a diagnosis and find treatments.

Despite the best efforts of an extremely talented array of medical professionals, we have not been able to stop her decline. Doctors don’t know for sure why Jenny got so sick but some think it may be connected to the Gardasil vaccinations she got (last one in March, 2007) and the weakening that seemed to start in spring and gradually built up. One sign was in April 2007 when everyone in her PE class laughed at her because she couldn’t jump a hurdle they considered really puny. It is hard to say when the weakening started but by summer she had a terrible limp.

One of the major things that would help her doctors figure out what to do is to find other people like Jenny (called “comparables”)–people that share her medical condition and perhaps have had luck with certain treatments.

We are creating this blog to aid us in our search for comparables. If you think you may know a comparable, we urge you to check out the comparable traits in the sidebar and email us at jenjensfamily@gmail.com. Even if you do not know a comparable, feel free to leave a comment of support or link to any information you think might be helpful for us.
