Mobile phones ‘more dangerous than smoking’

Brain expert warns of huge rise in tumours and calls on industry to take immediate steps to reduce radiation

Mobile phones could kill far more people than smoking or asbestos, a study by an award-winning cancer expert has concluded. He says people should avoid using them wherever possible and that governments and the mobile phone industry must take “immediate steps” to reduce exposure to their radiation.

The study, by Dr Vini Khurana, is the most devastating indictment yet published of the health risks.

It draws on growing evidence – exclusively reported in the IoS in October – that using handsets for 10 years or more can double the risk of brain cancer. Cancers take at least a decade to develop, invalidating official safety assurances based on earlier studies which included few, if any, people who had used the phones for that long. (more)

Yoga Nidra: A Wonderful Way to Relax

by Catherine Carter

Looking for a better way to relax? Here is a method of relaxation that is enjoyable and easy. It is Yoga Nidra. Known also as ‘the sleep of the yogis’. This is a form of ‘wakeful’ sleep. While performing the method it is important to stay awake (internally). This yoga benefits the mind/body and helps to regenerate your brain. Yoga nidra helps you to overcome fear, tension and anger. Another benefit is improved sleep.

This yoga is performed lying down on your back. The name of the yogic posture is shavasana. One lies on the floor or blanket or mat. It is important to keep the eyes closed. During the session the entire body is relaxed, all of your muscles, bones and even your face and eyes!

Look for a yoga studio in your area that offers it. There are also CD’s available on line that are easy enough to locate. With regular practice you will find it much easier to stay relaxed and centered. It will be worth it.

Preventing Diabetes

Research has demonstrated that diet/nutrition can lead to results where individuals who were diabetic were able to come off of medication. Healthy eating along with other factors such as good sound sleep and daily movement also go a long way to prevent the onset of many chronic conditions.

Here are some steps that you can take to build your overall health.

  • Make sure there is plenty of chlorophyll in your diet. This can come from a diet rich in plant matter or by taking chlorophyll supplements.
  • Add bran to your diet. Eat whole oats (oat groats) or steel cut oats or if you are not allergic to wheat add wheat bran to your diet or flax seed.
  • Eat less.
  • Chew your food thoroughly.
  • Eliminate greasy foods.
  • Reduce meat, eggs and cheese.
  • Eliminate white sugar, white flour products, substitute whole grain products.
  • Eat simple meals.
  • Move your body daily.
  • Learn how to relax, accumulated tension contributions.
  • Eliminate artificial sweeteners
  • Eliminate soda.

Taking steps to eat a balanced diet of whole foods, primarily plant based will go a long way to promote your health and well-being.

The Morgellon Mystery Disease, Isn’t Going Away

For many when they first here of this condition it seems so incredulous, it is often dismissed as a hoax. But for those who suffer from the strange condition where fibers grow in the body it is no laughing matter. Now there is speculation that genetically modified foods may be a source of the bizarre condition. Morgellon images (here)

(NaturalNews) The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has given care giant Kaiser Permanente over $300,000 to test and interview 150 to 500 patients suffering from Morgellons Disease. The study will be done in northern California where many Morgellons patients live.

Prior to this news, people had written off the disease as a hoax or the result of hypochondria. But recent evidence suggests that the disease is indeed real, and may be related to genetically modified (GM) food (more)

To Grill or Not To Grill?

by Catherine Carter

Long holiday weekends and warm days are perfect for family outings. And what is a gathering without the tastes of summer? One of the mainstays of summer is backyard cooking, where grilling reigns.

Here is some information to help you avoid the hazards of grilling and make it a healthier option for you and the family.

What’s So Harmful About Grilling?

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) is a contaminant produced by grilling foods. These substances have been identified as carcinogenic, mutagenic and teratogenic (causing birth defects). Researchers have been unable to determine an acceptable exposure tolerance. Charbroiling releases higher amounts of emissions than does grilling. High fat hamburger meat was the biggest offender. But chicken and beef both had varying amounts of the compounds present.

How might I be exposed to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)?

* Breathing air containing PAHs in the workplace of coking, coal-tar, and asphalt production plants; smokehouses; and municipal trash incineration facilities.
* Breathing air containing PAHs from cigarette smoke, wood smoke, vehicle exhausts, asphalt roads, or agricultural burn smoke.
* Coming in contact with air, water, or soil near hazardous waste sites.
* Eating grilled or charred meats; contaminated cereals, flour, bread, vegetables, fruits, meats; and processed or pickled foods.
* Drinking contaminated water or cow’s milk.
* Nursing infants of mothers living near hazardous waste sites may be exposed to PAHs through their mother’s milk.

Making Grilling Safer

  • marinate steaks with herbs and spices with herbs such as basil, mint, sage, oregano, thyme and rosemary.
  • researchers from Kansas State U, identified rosemary as having a protective antioxidant effect.
  • grill at lower temperatures.
  • use organic meat.
  • use leaner cuts of meat.
  • avoid inhaling the smoke as much as possible.

A Most Unusual Vegetable

At the co-op yesterday, I saw the strangest looking “vegetable”, really it is an edible green plant. It is supposed to be a delight and is available only a few short weeks; “it” being the Fiddlehead Fern. The plant looked odd. Now, let it be known that I am not veggie shy! I love vegetables, all types and I have completely overcome my childhood dislike of spinach. Still I have to admit I was not feeling adventurous enough to try this. Apparently they are a delicacy in Maine. Yum. I passed.

These plants have probably been on the earth since the time of the dinosaurs. If you should stumble on this plant at a market, you are now at least semi-prepared. You might want to give them a try. The season for the little fern is short…but we can all be ready in 2009! The Brooklyn Botanic Garden has a good write up on the plant.

Help for Urinary Tract Infections

by Catherine Carter

Cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpum) offers much more than mere tang for the tongue. Cranberries are good sources of natural antioxidants. In addition to the usual nutrients such as vitamins and minerals, extracts of the fruit are also rich in anthocyanin, flavonoids, and phenolic acids which also have antioxidant properties.

These little tart berries help to sanitize the urinary tract and may help to keep your internal plumbing free flowing. Cranberry juice or the cooked berries are an old time cure for bladder infections.

A diagnosis of a urinary tract infection refers to a presence of a large amount of bacteria in the urine that can cause pain during urination and can lead to more severe infections of the bladder and kidneys

A recent study highlighted the usefulness of cranberry, for UTIs. As far back as 1887 a Dr. Millspaugh commented on how Indians and settlers used the plant for uterine affections and puerperal (childbirth) diseases. Interestingly one of the old time uses of cranberries, by Native Americans was for nausea and research has now highlighted cranberries usefulness against e.coli bacteria.

Avoid juice with added sweeteners. Don’t drink in excess. The study did not determine a recommended dose.

Cranberries are a rich source of oxalic acid which in excess can inhibit calcium absorption. Here’s to your health.

Restricting Access to Natural Health Supplements: Stop Bill C-51

In Canada there is an attempt to stop access to natural health supplements. Regardless of where one lives, it’s all one world. We all should have the choice, the freedom to decide and to have access to the health care that we choose.

In 2003 Health Canada agents knowingly and willfully took action against a group of mentally ill Canadians, preventing them from accessing a natural health product they relied on to correct their mental illness and prevent suicides. A 2006 court trial exposed the clear and unchallenged evidence of warnings and pleadings by Ron LaJeunesse, Alberta Director of the Canadian Mental Health Association (click here for transcript). He bore witness of suicides that were the result of desperation when Canadians were advised they would no longer have access to their natural health product. When Constitutional Lawyer Shawn P. Buckley wrote an official request, asking the Minister to initiate a full inquiry into the actions taken by Health Canada agents, Minister Clement responded with silence (click here for letter). Instead, Assistant Deputy Minister Meena Ballantyne reviewed the case and said: “Health Canada fully supports actions taken…”(more)

Blog Review: Planet Trash

I found a wonderful blog that I really just had to share with my readers. Whenever I see people who drop trash on the ground it just does something to me, kind of like makes me g-r-r-r. While I know that it is not good for inner peace (OM), in my heart I just know it is wrong, the trash dropping. The blog’s description is The Earth is Not A Trash Can. I have seen folks roll down their car windows to toss their waste into the streets, come on people. I mean. Anyway I digress, so when I saw the topic of this blog, for me, I knew I had to pass it on.

And then there are the school children who eat their snacks and mindlessly toss the wrappings on the ground. The earth is our mother. Everything comes from the earth and without respecting and honoring the earth we cannot truly respect ourselves.

If you have items that need to be disposed of while in your car, keep a small plastic bag in your car, place your trash in it and empty it out with your weekly trash collection at home. Avoid eating while out walking around. This helps you to avoid empty calories and not have trash to drop off. Or eat and simply hold onto the packaging until you get to the next trash can.
Here’s to finding ways to walk more gently on our earth mother.
